The Department of Health and Social Care said, “as of 9am 8 March 2020, a total of 23,513 people have been tested, 23,240 negative and now 273 positive.
“Two patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have died.”
This is the largest rise with just 24 hours, as on Saturday there was 206 people confirmed infected with the virus.
This morning it was announced that three more were diagnosed in Northern Ireland with three more confirmed cases in Wales.
The Health Secretary Matt Hancock is preparing to mobilise an army of around 3m volunteers to help the NHS across the UK, they would be called upon to give a few hours a day or a week to help out in nursing homes and community centres.
He said people who correctly self-isolated are a “good example” to the public.
Hancock said, “Tackling coronavirus is a national effort and they have set a good example for the rest of the public as more people may need to self-isolate themselves at home.”
Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, Dr Harris warned coronavirus outbreak is “still building” and said the rapid growth in cases across Iran and Italy are “concerning.”
The wealthy Lombardy region along with 14 provinces in four other regions were placed in lockdown affecting over a quarter of Italians until 3 April.
Late Saturday night prime minister Giuseppe Conte signed the unprecedented decree which also includes the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country.
On early Sunday morning Conte said, “We want to guarantee the health of our citizens. We understand that these measures will impose sacrifices, sometimes small and sometimes very big.”
