World Cup beer shortage looms as Iran conflict threatens CO2 supplies

Pubs across Britain have been warned they could run short of beer during the World Cup as the conflict between the United States and Iran threatens carbon dioxide supplies, a key ingredient in brewing.

Brewers say disruption linked to the crisis in Iran could squeeze global CO2 availability, raising the prospect of flat pints or empty taps just weeks before the tournament kicks off.

The gas is essential not only for carbonating drinks but also for packaging and preserving beer, meaning any shortage can quickly ripple through the supply chain.

Richard Bradbury, managing director of Yorkshire brewer Theakston, told The Telegraph the issue was already causing concern within the industry.

“There are real worries about CO2 supplies if the situation escalates,” he said.

“Breweries rely on stable access to the gas, and without it production and distribution become much more difficult.”

He urged ministers to step in to support the sector if shortages materialise, warning that smaller brewers and pubs would be particularly vulnerable to any sustained disruption.

The warning comes at a critical time for the hospitality industry, with pubs hoping a busy summer of sport will help boost trade after a prolonged period of rising costs.

Industry figures say that while contingency plans are in place, the system remains fragile, and any prolonged instability in key supply regions could leave landlords struggling to meet demand at one of the busiest times of the year.

For pubgoers, the prospect is a simple one: as the World Cup begins, the nation’s bars may not be able to keep the pints flowing.

Chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Emma McClarkin said: “It was a big issue for us with the war in Ukraine... At this moment, we are fine, but are we keeping a close eye on it? 100%.”
