WH Smith to close some shops as virus takes toll

WH Smith has fallen to an annual pre-tax loss of £280 million after the Covid-19 crisis led to the temporary closure of its shops and dramatically hit footfall at its airport and railway station units.

The company said that it could be forced to close 25 shops this year.

In better news, WH Smith said that there were “encouraging signs of recovery” in its US travel business, where the vast majority of customers are domestic travellers, and that its UK high street shops had enjoyed a “steady recovery” after reopening during the summer.

However, the firm will not pay a dividend due to the fallout from the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
