In the initial days of the Middle East conflict, Israel and its allied forces launched an impressive offensive, firing approximately 800 Patriot missiles at various targets in Iran.

This starkly contrasts with the situation in Ukraine, which has received a total of only around 600 Patriot missiles over the four-year duration of its ongoing conflict with Russia, as reported by The New York Times.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, provided insights into the nature of the military actions in the Middle East.

They indicated that these strikes were aimed at neutralising an extensive arsenal of Iranian attack drones, as well as more than 500 ballistic missiles that could pose significant threats. In comparison, Ukraine’s own Patriot missile defence systems have struggled to perform effectively, primarily due to a severe shortage of PAC-3 interceptor missiles.

This critical lack of resources resulted in several missile launchers being left inoperative during the previous month, rendering Ukrainian defences unable to counter Russian ballistic attacks effectively.

Furthermore, Presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn elaborated on the challenges faced by Ukraine’s military. While Ukrainian forces have made commendable efforts to bolster defences in urban areas against aerial threats, he pointed out that coverage remains insufficient in several crucial, vulnerable regions of the country.

In response to these ongoing challenges, President Zelenskyy announced plans to implement personnel adjustments within the Air Force units. These changes are aimed specifically at strengthening short-range air defence capabilities in the areas identified as most problematic, recognising the urgent need to enhance Ukraine’s readiness against unfolding threats.
