The UK has recorded 6,874 more coronavirus case in 24 hours, compared with 6,643 cases on Thursday, with 34 more further deaths.

This comes after the government scientific advisory group SAGE said on Friday that the transmission rates has increased from between 1.1 and 1.4 last week to now being between 1.2 and 1.5.

New data provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated the number of infections across England has soared 60% in one week.

The ONS infection survey said there was around 9,600 coronavirus infections each day in England between 13 and 19 September, up by 3,000 from the previous week.

The ONS said, “The estimate shows the number of infections has increased in recent weeks.

In recent weeks, there has been clear evidence of an increase in the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 in all age groups, with the current rates highest in the 17 to 24 age group.

“There is evidence of higher infection rates in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, London and North East.”

SAGE believes that there is “widespread growth of the epidemic across the country,” with new coronavirus infections rising every day, by between 4% and 8%.
