The European Commission chief, Ursula von der Leyen has announced today that they have come to an tentative agreement to allow the Ukraine and Moldova to EU candidate status.
This will be a hammer blow for Vladimir Putin which will affect any future decisions that he may have to invade Moldova.
She told reporters in Brussels: “Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and the country’s determination to live up to European values and standards.”
After meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the “Ukraine belongs to the European family” and next week EU leaders will endorse the Commissions request.
“Precisely because of the bravery of the Ukrainians, Europe can create a new history of freedom, and finally remove the grey zone in Eastern Europe between the EU and Russia,” Zelensky said in his nightly video address on Thursday.
He added, the “Ukraine has come close to the EU, closer than any time since independence,” then said, unspecified “good news” to come.
