Russian forces have been accused of committing more war crimes as they dropped a “huge bomb” on a theatre in Mariupol which was home to a thousand people including children and pregnant mothers.
Ukraine Foreign Minister said civilians are buried under rubble and the constant shelling by Russia is making it difficult to rescue them.
There were giant letters at both ends of the theatre spelling out “children” which was visible from satellite images to protect it from being bombed.
The city’s mayor Vadim Boychenko said on Wednesday night more than a thousand people had been sheltering in the theatre, adding: “We will never forgive this.”
An official from the Mayor’s office said the bomb shelter in the building withstood the attack but it is not known how many surivivors there are.
“Russian aircraft purposefully dropped a huge bomb on the drama theatre in the city centre,” said President Zelenskyy in his nightly address.
“Hundreds of people were hiding from the shelling there… The building was destroyed. The death toll is still unknown.”
Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk regional administration said on Telegram that Russian airstrikes blew up a swimming pool complex where women and children were sheltering in Mariupol.
He said, “Now there are pregnant women and women with children under the rubble there.”
