Vladimir Putin has drafted in Syrian military who specialise in the deadly barrel bombs which killed more than 11,000 civilians during the 10-year Syrian civil war.
The barrel bombs weigh between 300kg and 600kg and can destroy anything within a 800ft radius which will if used wipe out towns and cities.
The Guardian newspaper said that intelligence officers said more than 50 Syrian experts had travelled to Russia a few weeks ago to train Putin’s army in the use of the barrel bombs which can contain chemicals.
During the Syrian civil war Bashar al-Assad’s forces dropped the barrel bombs from helicopters which caused devastating injuries.
The Ukrainian forces are armed with a huge amount of anti-aircraft missiles which have successfully been used to blow up Russian helicopter and fighter jets.
Speaking to the newspaper a European official said due to the Ukraine having such missiles this could be the reason barrel bombs have not been seen in the country as this has prevented Putin from winning air superiority.
“We know the capacity is there, but if they use it, they lose, we will know who’s done it, and they will likely be killed anyway,” the anonymous official told the Guardian.
