ALDI is proving to be stiff competition for the ‘big four’ supermarkets as it has been revealed that one in three families have shopped at the budget supermarket in the past 12 weeks.

Research by retail analysts Kantar has shown that ALDI’s total share of the grocery market has gone up from 3% to 3.9% during the 12-week period.

Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, on the other hand, have all seen a fall in market share in 12 weeks to 10 November compared to the same period a year ago.

Tesco saw market share drop from 30.5% to 29.8% and Asda’s market share fell from 17.6% to 17.2%.

Sainsbury’s market share dropped from 16.9% to 16.8% and Morrisons’ from 11.7% to 11.5%.

Edward Garner, from Kantar Worldpanel, said: “The number of shoppers visiting Aldi has grown by 16% year-on-year. In fact, almost a third of British households have shopped in Aldi in the past 12 weeks.”
