The Royal Hospital Chelsea have sadly announced on Thursday that nine Chelsea Pensioners have passed away from coronavirus and 58 have recovered.
The sad announcement comes as the hospital are preparing for VE Day commemorations on Friday.
General Sir Adrian Bradshaw told of his sadness at the deaths and said tomorrow’s 75th anniversary of VE Day was “a time of hope and reunion that feels particularly poignant.”
The General said, “Most of our Pensioners have risked their lives serving our nation through war and conflict.
“Just as our NHS staff and care workers are providing vital and sometimes dangerous service to the nation here at home during this crisis.
“We salute all those working in the health and care sectors at this time and we understand only too well the difficulties that they face.”
A specialist army medical team have been helping to tackle the virus threat and are testing all of the Chelsea Pensioners who show symptoms.
