According to a recent military report from Kyiv dated April 25, Russia has experienced staggering losses in personnel, with an estimated 1,324,690 troops having fallen since the onset of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
This figure underscores the profound human toll of the ongoing conflict, now in its third year with no clear resolution in sight.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that just within the last 24 hours, Russian forces incurred 1,230 additional casualties.
This uptick in losses is attributed to intense, persistent fighting along the front lines, where both sides are heavily engaged, with no indication that the conflict’s intensity is diminishing.
In addition to personnel losses, the Russian military has suffered severe setbacks in terms of equipment. Ukrainian sources estimate that Russia has lost nearly 11,900 tanks, over 24,400 armoured combat vehicles, and more than 40,600 artillery systems throughout the duration of the war. The inventory of losses includes 435 aircraft, 349 helicopters, over 255,000 drones, and dozens of naval vessels.
While Ukraine continues to keep its own casualty figures confidential, primarily for operational security reasons, Western analysts largely concur that the scale of losses suffered by Russia surpasses those endured by Ukraine.
Insights from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) suggest that the casualty ratio may be 2:1 or higher in favour of Ukraine, indicating a significant advantage in manpower losses.
A January 2026 report by CSIS estimates that Ukraine itself has sustained total casualties ranging between 500,000 and 600,000 since the beginning of the invasion, with the number of Ukrainians killed in action estimated between 100,000 and 140,000. These figures illuminate the catastrophic impact of the conflict on both nations as the war continues unabated.
