A major London transport hub has been evacuated and closed after reports of passengers feeling unwell sparked fears of a possible gas leak.

Emergency services were called to Farringdon Station on Thursday morning, where officers moved to clear the station while investigations were carried out.

The closure has caused significant disruption across the capital’s rail network, with no Elizabeth line services running between Paddington and Abbey Wood.

Thameslink services have also been suspended through the station, while replacement bus services have been put in place between Blackfriars and St Pancras International.

A British Transport Police spokesman told GB News: “Officers were called to Farringdon station at 9.42am today (April 30) following reports of a suspected gas leak in the station, with a small number of passengers reporting feeling unwell.

“Officers are in attendance, alongside the ambulance service and the fire brigade, and the station has been evacuated while enquiries are conducted.”

Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the Elizabeth line section of Tottenham Court Road station has also been closed as part of the wider safety response.

Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and Circle line services are currently not stopping at Farringdon.

Passengers reported feeling unwell shortly before the evacuation, prompting an immediate response from staff and emergency services. The cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed, and enquiries are ongoing.

TfL said disruption is expected to continue until at least late morning, with commuters advised to check before travelling and allow extra time for journeys.

The incident comes during a busy commuter period, adding further strain to an already congested transport network in central London.

London Fire Brigade wrote on X: “Two fire engines, two fire rescue units and specialist officers are in attendance.

“The Brigade is working alongside partners at the scene. People are advised to avoid the area at this time.”
