London heatwave sparks rail chaos

London’s soaring temperatures are already causing disruption across the rail network as the capital braces for highs of up to 35C, with train operators warning passengers to travel only if essential.

The latest heatwave has forced several operators to cancel services, reduce timetables and introduce replacement buses amid fears the extreme temperatures could damage railway infrastructure.

Engineers warn that intense heat can cause rails to buckle, overhead power lines to sag and lineside fires, with steel tracks capable of reaching more than 50C even when air temperatures are around 30C.

London officially entered a heatwave on Monday after recording three consecutive days above 28C.

Temperatures are forecast to climb even higher, with the capital expected to reach 34C to 35C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Great Western Railway (GWR) has cancelled several services between London Paddington and Oxford, reducing the usual four trains an hour because of the heat.

Passengers whose trains have been cancelled can travel on earlier or later services at no extra cost, while tickets are also being accepted on selected CrossCountry services.

GWR has warned that further disruption is possible and has urged customers to travel only if essential.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) said high temperatures have forced some trains out of service, leading to cancellations and revised timetables on routes including services to and from London St Pancras International.

Passengers have been advised to check before travelling, avoid afternoon journeys where possible and travel before midday when temperatures are lower.

Customers who no longer wish to travel can claim a full refund.

London Northwestern Railway is also experiencing heat-related disruption.

Replacement buses are operating between Bletchley and Bedford until around 6.30pm, with passengers warned journeys could take longer than usual.

With temperatures expected to remain exceptionally high for the rest of the week, further disruption cannot be ruled out.

Rail operators are urging passengers to check live travel updates before setting out as Britain’s transport network comes under increasing pressure from the extreme summer heat.
