Labour’s Ukraine stance exposes muddled approach to Europe

Labour’s support for Ukrainian EU membership exposes a major inconsistency in its own policy towards Europe, the Rejoin EU Party says.

Together with other European leaders such as Friederich Merz and Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister has put forward several proposals for ending in a just and sustainable manner the war in Ukraine, including “strong support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.”

Nothing could better illustrate the incoherence of Starmer’s European policy. He has been increasingly vocal in recent weeks about the damage done to the British economy by Brexit; and now he recognises, rightly, that Ukrainian membership of the EU would be a major contribution to European peace and stability.

But he rejects any serious discussion of British re-entry into the EU or its main constituent institutions, a rejection in which he has the wholehearted support of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Rejoin EU Party chairman Brendan Donnelly said, “I suspect Starmer has now lost track entirely of the self-contradictions and anomalies arising from his dysfunctional policy towards the EU.

“But this is a particularly flagrant example of double-think. It begs the question as to why, if he so strongly endorses Ukrainian EU membership, he doesn’t similarly support it for the UK. Sauce for the Ukrainian goose should be sauce for the British gander.”
