King of the north or Game of Thrones?

25th Jun 26 2:00 pm

The UK population has been hearing that the new king of a socialist dawn, Andy Burnham, is about to be crowned. Not by being elected by the electorate, but by the Labour Party itself. Still that is the way of Kings I suppose!

Kier Starmer was not liked by many people, most didn’t know him, or had even met him, so perhaps he didn’t deserve such universal dislike-or maybe he did?

My prediction is that Starmer will be elevated to the Lords quite quickly so I doubt we have heard the last of two tier Kier.

Andy Burnham is another story. On the face of it Burnham has a less authoritarian & reasonable approach than Starmer, but is it masking a rabid Corbinyte socialist? That is a question being asked by the general public, and one which will be answered very soon.

If Burnham is forced into a harder left wing approach, perhaps encouraged by, Miatta Hahnbulleh, the Labour MP for Peckham in London, he/they will be dumped by the electorate at the next General Election, unless he can change the rules regarding elections before he is found out.

I expect our new Prime Minister Elect to bring in Proportional Representation fairly quickly to make sure that Reform cannot ever become too powerful. He will surely be supported in this by many of his own back benchers, the LibDems (remember them!), the Greens, SNP and most left wing parties at Westminster. It would be a very popular initiative which despite the dangers of electing successive weak governments, it’s time has probably come.

It is hard supporting a, first past the post, system when we live in the era of social media, where the people will have their say regardless of how dictatorial a government may be. The demise of Kier Starmer was largely brought about by social media. He never really had a proper mandate because only around 20% of the electorate voted for him in the 2024 General Election. Trying to gag 80% of the  population and gain traction when calling ordinary people, far right racists, proved beyond possible. These days any wise leader would recognise this fact, and understand that social media is here to stay, something Starmer wasn’t wise enough to do.

As the saying goes “ Life is a mystery, The past is history and the future is unknown”

So with that thought what sort of man is Andy Burnham? Well people who know him well say that he is thoughtful, intelligent, well meaning, kind, and has a big heart. All wonderful character traits and I don’t dispute any, but is he tough enough to manage some of his more hardline back benchers? That is a question only time will answer, but I have my doubts.

Will he tell them that the welfare bill simply must be cut? Will he hand, whoever becomes defence secretary in his new government, the cash to build a strong military? Will he stop the boats, and stop housing illegal migrants in HMOs, where without any real identification or background checks they are free to walk the streets or work in the black economy? These are very serious questions for which the public will demand answers.

Another huge question which needs an answer is, will he stop Miliband ( or whoever ) from pushing an unrealistic Net Zero time frame. The country is facing considerable economic headwinds which will cause more and more hardship unless we start delivering an enterprise agenda where jobs are created, not reduced. AI will do enough of that without any help!

We desperately need to grow the economy. Without private enterprise being a very big part of creating that growth the UK will continue to stagnate, and with it people will start losing jobs in millions. As Bruce Springsteen sang in his ballad, My Home Town, “ they ain’t comin back”.

All these big questions are searching for an answer but here is the biggest question of them all!

Will the duly elected King of The North be a good wartime Prime Minister because unless he seriously addresses, and then adequately funds, our military, that is what he is destined to become.
