Halloween is giving London businesses a boost before Black Friday

Halloween provides a major opportunity for London businesses. Historically, it’s helped retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues to generate critical revenue ahead of Black Friday.

Statistics show that 63.5% of Londoners now take part in Halloween celebrations, making it one of the most active regions in the UK. Londoners are also the biggest spenders, spending £49.50 on average, double the UK average.

Halloween is a major retail event for London

Even though Black Friday is usually the start of the festive spending season, Halloween gives local businesses the chance to attract customers much earlier. 57% of people leave their Halloween shopping until the final week, which creates a surge in traffic for UK retailers.

London is becoming more focused on selling experiences. Last year, The London Dungeon introduced a brand-new Dracula experience, transporting visitors to the Victorian era. Seasonal attractions like this help to amplify visitor spending beyond standard tourism.

Cinemas also host horror marathons, and it’s not uncommon to see outdoor screenings of classic movies. Escape rooms overhaul their theme to accommodate Halloween, and luxurious hotels are starting to embrace this trend more, too.

The prestigious Sofitel London St James hotel has previously offered a Phantom of the Opera afternoon tea, which often sells out way ahead of time. This shows how spikes in foot traffic can be used to the advantage of local businesses.

Halloween is a year-round business

Halloween itself may provide a spike in demand, but horror as a whole is a commercial success. Blockbusters like Final Destination Bloodlines and Smile 2 have helped audiences engage with the genre beyond October.

The Walking Dead is so successful that it’s gone on to inspire new franchises, including Fear the Walking Dead. In iGaming, The Walking Dead is a theme too. The Walking Dead Cash Collect game is one of the many slot games UK that can be played online and features iconic characters, including Daryl Dixon, Negan, and Rick Grimes.

The capital’s love of horror and zombies extends further than that. One of the biggest Halloween traditions is the World Zombie Day event, where hundreds of people dress up as zombies and make their way through the city’s streets. The event has run for several years now and attracts people from all across the UK.

Some routes take people through the Marble Arch onto Oxford Street and then through Mayfair, which leads people into major business districts. While retailers like Tesco dominate grocery spending, people are looking to local London businesses to try to support the economy.

Growing environmental pressure has reduced the demand for single-use decorations, which positions London businesses that sell higher-end, premium products in an advantageous position.

As the years go by and as consumer demands continue to be shaped by external factors, including the media, environment and economy, it seems that Halloween could quickly become one of the capital’s busiest retail periods. If local London businesses can adapt quickly, it’s possible to build momentum before Black Friday, extending profit margins while ensuring that major trends are being capitalised on.
