Chancellor George Osborne suffered a major blow on the eve of the Budget after an ITV News Index/ComRes poll found that nearly half of the British public want him to be replaced.

Results showed that while 44% of the public think the Chancellor should step down, 30% want him to stay on.

Twelve per cent of the British public said they want Business Secretary Vince Cable to replace Osborne while 5% voted for Foreign Secretary William Hague, 3% named Home Secretary Theresa May and 22% wanted ‘someone else’.

The poll also showed that 41% Britons think Osborne should ditch his current planned spending cuts for investment in infrastructure.
