New polling from More in Common shows that the British public is overwhelmingly concerned about an escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran, and believe it is crucial that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.

84 per cent believe it is important that Iran is prevented from producing nuclear weapons. This includes more than half (53 per cent) who describe it as ‘very important’.

This viewpoint spans across politics, although Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are most likely to think it is important: 92 per cent of 2024 Conservative voters, and 90 per cent of Liberal Democrats think it is important to prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons.

Younger Britons are more ambivalent: More than a third (35 per cent) of 18-24 year olds believe that it is unimportant to prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons, compared to almost none (3 per cent) of those above the age of 75.

44 per cent of Britons think the UK should support military efforts to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Conservative and Reform voters are most likely to support British military intervention: 55 per cent of each voter group believes we should support efforts. Interestingly, despite their high concern about Iran developing nuclear weapons, Liberal Democrats are the least supportive of intervention (38 per cent support; 41 per cent opposed).

The public are broadly worried about the conflict escalating. Seven in ten Britons (71 per cent) say they are worried about the conflict, including 29 per cent who say they are ‘very worried’.

Concern about escalation makes Britons more – not less – likely to support British military intervention. Nearly half (47 per cent) of those who are worried about the conflict think the UK should support military efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, compared to 37 per cent of those who are not worried.
