Boris warns ‘there is a tidal wave of Omicron coming’ and UK is facing an ‘emergency with the new variant’

The Prime Minister gave a televised address to the nation on Sunday evening and warned that there is a “tidal wave of Omicron coming” and is strongly urging Brits to get their booster jab for protection.

Boris Johnson warned that two vaccines is not enough to protect people from Omicron and the UK is facing an “emergency in our battle with the new variant.”

There are still millions of people who have not been vaccinated in England, and Johnson warned Omicron will rip through those people which will overwhelm the NHS which could lead to “many deaths.”

Johnson said the country “must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection” to curb the spread of this highly transmissible variant.

Military planners will work in every region and vaccine clinics will be open seven days a week, and over 18s in England can book their booster jabs from today.

Johnson said, “No-one should be in any doubt: there is a tidal wave of Omicron coming, and I’m afraid it is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need.

“But the good news is that our scientists are confident that with a third dose a booster dose we can all bring our level of protection back up.

“To hit the pace we need, we’ll need to match the NHS’s best vaccination day yet – and then beat it day after day.

“This will require an extraordinary effort.”

Johnson admitted that other care could be delayed as the NHS will concentrate all their firepower into boosting the nation.

“It will mean some other appointments will need to be postponed until the New Year,” the PM said.

“But if we don’t do this now, the wave of Omicron could be so big that cancellations and disruptions, like the loss of cancer appointments, would be even greater next year.”

Labour leader Keir Starmer backed Johnson’s calls for Brits to get booster and said the public must “keep our foot on the pedal.”

“The arrival of the worrying new variant is a reminder that the pandemic is not over. And vaccines are the best weapon in our fight,” he said.

“The vaccine is safe and effective. It protects us and those around us. We will always support the NHS and act in the public interest.

“Therefore the government has our support in the effort to accelerate the booster programme.

“It’s also vital that we use the Christmas holidays to get the vaccine out to eligible children.

“I urge everyone to get boosted as soon as you can – and if you haven’t had your first or second jab yet, now is the time to come forward.”

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has warned on Sunday that the UK could have tens of thousands of Brits being hospitalised as there are now “cases in hospital with Omicron.”

He told Sky News that cases could very easily spiral out of control as scientists predicted on Saturday, should infections hit one million by the end of December.
