Online retailer Amazon are to cut 18,000 jobs globally which it the largest layoff in the firm’s history.

Amazon employs 1.5 million people worldwide and it is understood that jobs will be lost in Europe and the UK.

The roles which will be affected are Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go along with their HR division amid an in-depth review of the business.

Chief executive Andy Jassy said in a note to workers, “These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure.”

The economy was to blame and Jassy said that Amazon has “hired rapidly over the last several years.”

An employee leaked the details of the note Jassy sent to workers and he said, “We decided it was better to share this news earlier so you can hear the details directly from me.”

He added, “Companies that last a long time go through different phases. They’re not in heavy people expansion mode every year.”
