Two US nuclear capable B-52 Stratofortress bombers with three NATO fighter jets have taken part in a Battle Task Force mission over Europe’s skies.

Amid heightened tensions in Eastern Europe NATO’s Air Command said, the “B-52s are training with Allied Air Forces during their BTF mission strengthening our Euro-Atlantic partnership.”

Footage filmed from the cockpit of one of the Stratofortress bombers shows the nuclear B-52s with fighter jets from Romania, Italy and Spain.

It is not known when the footage was filmed by NATO’s Air Command but after a Russian fighter jet intercepted the B-52s on Tuesday the video was released.

A Russian Su-35 fighter jet was scrambled on Tuesday to intercept two US strategic nuclear B-52H bombers which Moscow claim were “flying in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation.”

This is the second intercept by Russian fighter jets in a week against US aircraft as last week a Reaper MQ-9 drone which was gathering intelligence was downed by a Russian warplane which crashed in the Black Sea.

The Russian Ministry said the Su-35 fighter was scrambled to prevent “a violation of the state border” by the B-52 bombers, adding the aircraft had reached a “designated air patrol area.”

The Ministry said, according to TASS, “On March 20, 2023, the radars of the air defence forces of the Western Military District on duty detected two air targets flying in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation over the Baltic Sea.”
