US Marines deploy as Iran threatens to ‘set troops on fire’

29th Mar 26 1:27 pm

The United States has deployed thousands of Marines to the Middle East, significantly heightening tensions with Iran as both sides approach the possibility of a ground conflict.

US Central Command has confirmed that the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7) has arrived in the region, bringing with it a large contingent of sailors and Marines amid the escalating war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

This deployment coincides with a stark warning from Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliamentary speaker, who stated that Iranian forces are preparing for a confrontation with American troops.

“Our armed forces are waiting for the arrival of American troops on the ground to set them on fire,” he said, adding that Iran is ready to retaliate against US allies across the region.

He accused Washington of discussing negotiations publicly while secretly planning a ground offensive, declaring, “Our firing continues. Our missiles are in place. Our determination and faith have increased.”

The arrival of the Tripoli follows reports that the Pentagon is preparing to deploy at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, a rapid-response unit trained to seize territory and secure critical infrastructure in hostile environments.

Officials suggest that this deployment may form part of a broader strategy for weeks of ground operations, raising the prospect of a significant escalation beyond the current air and missile exchanges.

Among the potential targets being considered are Kharg Island, through which approximately 90% of Iran’s oil exports pass, and key positions near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

US CENTCOM wrote on social media: “US Sailors and Marines aboard USS Tripoli (LHA 7) arrived in the US Central Command area of responsibility, March 27.

The America-class amphibious assault ship serves as the flagship for the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group / 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, composed of about 3,500 Sailors and Marines in addition to transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault and tactical assets.

This deployment also coincides with renewed activity from Iranian-backed forces throughout the region. Houthi rebels in Yemen have launched additional strikes against Israel and have vowed to intensify their attacks in the coming days, indicating an increasing risk of a multi-front war extending from the Gulf to the eastern Mediterranean.

Military analysts warn that the introduction of US ground forces, even in limited numbers, could mark a turning point in the conflict, transitioning it from a series of airstrikes and proxy warfare to confrontation.

With US naval assets increasing in the region, air bases under repeated attack, and Iranian leaders openly threatening American troops, the conflict appears to be entering a more dangerous phase. The arrival of amphibious forces capable of launching land operations suggests that Washington is preparing for scenarios far beyond mere deterrence, raising concerns that a full-scale regional war may soon be unavoidable.
