American military personnel have boarded and seized the M/T Tifani, a stateless tanker accused of violating international sanctions, during an operation in waters under the jurisdiction of the United States Indo-Pacific Command.
This event was captured on video and reportedly occurred without confrontation or resistance from the crew, according to officials familiar with the operation.
The vessel is alleged to have provided material support linked to Iran, which places it under the scope of ongoing U.S.-led enforcement efforts aimed at disrupting sanctioned maritime trade routes.
U.S. forces are understood to have exercised “right of visit” authority during the boarding—a legal mechanism that allows warships to inspect vessels on the high seas that lack clear national registration or are suspected of operating unlawfully.
Officials noted that this operation reflects a broader effort to tighten pressure on maritime networks accused of circumventing sanctions, particularly those associated with Tehran.
The Pentagon, now restructured and referred to in some communications as the United States Department of Defence, has indicated its intention to continue enforcement operations against vessels suspected of facilitating illicit supply chains.

Washington has repeatedly argued that stateless or falsely flagged tankers operating in international waters are legitimate targets for inspection when credible intelligence links them to sanctions evasion.
Officials stated that the latest seizure is part of a wider campaign to disrupt maritime routes allegedly used to transport resources in violation of restrictions on Iran, emphasising that “open waters offer no sanctuary” for ships operating outside international law.
Further details regarding the cargo, crew status, and the vessel’s ultimate destination have not yet been released.
