Unsettled weather to make way for warmth ahead of Bank Holiday weekend

After a soggy and unsettled start to the week, forecasters say Britain could be on course for its warmest day of the year so far by Friday, with temperatures potentially climbing to 28C in parts of the South East.

Rain and heavy showers are expected to continue pushing north-eastwards through Tuesday morning, with the possibility of thunderstorms developing across central and northern areas as unstable conditions linger across the country.

Wednesday is also set to remain unsettled, with outbreaks of rain and variable cloud affecting many regions, particularly in the north and west, as low pressure continues to dominate much of the UK’s weather pattern.

However, conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the week as higher pressure begins building from the south.

Forecasters say Thursday should bring brighter skies and drier weather for parts of the South East, while rain clears north-eastwards through the morning. Western and north-western areas are still expected to remain more changeable, with persistent rain possible as a slower-moving low-pressure system lingers offshore.

By Friday, temperatures are forecast to rise more sharply, especially across southern and eastern England, where some areas could see highs of up to 28C.

If reached, it would mark the hottest day recorded in Britain so far this year and signal a dramatic turnaround from the grey and damp conditions that have dominated much of the week.

Temperatures elsewhere are expected to remain near seasonal averages, though many areas should still see warmer, more humid conditions by the end of the week.

The improving outlook comes after repeated spells of unsettled weather in recent days, with heavy showers and thunderstorms causing disruption in some regions.

Meteorologists say the transition reflects a developing battle between lingering Atlantic low-pressure systems to the west and warmer air strengthening and pushing northwards from continental Europe.

While forecasters caution that confidence remains lower for north-western parts of the UK, many in the south and east are likely to experience a distinctly more summery end to the week — just in time for the weekend.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson said: “The weather later this week will feel like a marked contrast from recent days, with warm, fine and settled weather for many. While the warmth will persist through the Bank Holiday weekend, conditions will turn more unsettled later Friday and into Saturday, with a mix of cloud, showers and longer spells of rain.

“There is also the chance of thundery rain in places.  Nonetheless, temperatures should remain warm or very warm through Saturday and into Sunday, with highs around 26°C in the south across the weekend and into next week.”

Sunday sees high pressure becoming the dominant influence, reducing rainfall chances and allowing temperatures to remain above average. This follows through to the start of next week with warm and fine weather likely for many.
