UK to deliver over £600 million for Ukraine’s air defences

The British Defence Minister John Healey has announced that the UK will deliver more than £600 million to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences as Russia continues with their brutal onslaught.

The £685 million will be used to buy “thousands of air defence systems, missiles and automated turrets to shoot down drones,” Healey announced at the 32nd Ramstein meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG).

The British Defence Secretary said the donation is the biggest single-year investment into air defence for Ukraine,” and deliveries will continue through into next year.

He added, “Ukrainians continue to fight with huge courage — military and civilians alike.”

Since the full-scale war in Ukraine started the UK has given £13 billion in defence aid.

The German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin has given Kyiv two Patriot air defence systems and the ninth Iris-T aid defence complex to Ukraine.

Pistorius said, “Since our last meeting, we have significantly strengthened Ukraine‘s air defence, in particular through the delivery of two Patriot systems promised in August, which was made possible thanks to our Norwegian partners, as well as the delivery of the ninth Iris-T system.”

Germany will transfer a large number of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles to Ukraine and furthermore Berlin has allocated an additional $200 million to enable Kyiv to buy critical weapons, and ammunition, RBC-Ukraine reports.

Healey said that with the UK’s investment Kyiv will receive missiles, and automated turrets to shoot down Russian drones.
