The chairman of the Defence Select Committee Tobias Ellwood has warned that the UK has “no leverage” over Russia.
The prominent Tory MP has hit out over the West’s response to Russia and said “there is no coordination between what the West is actually doing.”
Ellwood told LBC radio, “Putin is aligning Russia towards China. So, any sanctions that we threaten absolutely plays into his own strategy.
“That’s my point.
“We don’t have a strategy and the final one has to do with dialogue.
“You know, Putin naturally craves the international spotlight and we’re actually running around him and he’s enjoying this.
“We have no leverage, we have no collective effort. There’s no coordination between what the West is actually doing.”
The Tory MP accused the government of trying to “hide behind the fact” that Ukraine is not a NATO member.
He pointed out that the UK stepped in to help non-NATO member Libya, and added, “We’ve got this completely wrong.”
Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said that the UK will back Ukraine if they decide to placate Russia and not join NATO.
This comes as the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK suggested that his country could discontinue joining NATO to prevent war with Russia.
Heappey said the UK “will support” Ukraine if they no longer wish to join NATO, and added, “That’s for the Ukrainian government to decide.”
