Shell Energy to pay £390,000 for overcharging utilities customers

Shell Energy Retail have overcharged around 12,000 customer’s accounts on their default tariffs and have been forced to pay £390,000 by the industry regulator.

Ofgem called on the firm to refund and compensate affected customers and forced to pay an additional £200,000 to Ofgem’s consumer redress fund.

After the price cap was introduced in January this year Ofgem found the firm had overcharged on its default tariffs.

Between January and March 2019, the regulator’s price cap monitoring found that Shell Energy Retail overcharged 12,000 customers’ accounts by £100,736.
