Salisbury case suspects are Russian ‘state assassins’, May tells MPs

Just hours after Metropolitan police revealed that two Russian nationals have been named and charged over the Novichok poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, PM Theresa May has now told the MPs that the two accused are officers from Russia’s military intelligence.

The men, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, are “officers from the Russian military intelligence service.

She added that the attack was ‘not a rogue operation’ but almost certainly “approved outside the GRU at a senior level of the Russian state.”

However, asked if she “means president Putin” was responsible, Ms May declined to name him, replying: “I mean a decision, outside the GRU, at a senior level of the Russian state.”
