Rutte puts Russia’s nose out of joint insisting they have ‘no say or veto over who can join NATO’

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has hit out at Moscow making it exceptionally clear that they have “no say or veto” over who can join the alliance.

Rutte put the Kremlin’s nose out of joint telling them quite firmly that accession to NATO is based on unanimous agreement amongst the member states, and Russia will not be allowed to interfere in the alliance.

Rutte told Spanish media outlet El Pais, “Russia has no say or veto over who can be a NATO member.

“But within the Alliance, membership requires unanimity.”

The US President Donald Trump (also known as Krasnov) opposes Ukraine joining NATO, as he does not want to lose favour with Vladimir Putin.

Putin has claimed that Kyiv joining NATO is another reason for Russia starting their full-scale war with Ukraine, which they see as a security concern as they do not want NATO on their border.

However, since Putin started his full-scale war in Ukraine Finland and Sweden who shares a border with Russia has now joined the alliance.

Rutte said that the newest version of the peace plan provides a “good foundation for further discussions,” he added that any further proposals will need a “separate, parallel discussion” with NATO “on certain issues,” the Kyiv Independent reported.

Rutte added, “When you look at the peace plan (we) want to ensure that Putin never tries to attack Ukraine again.

“If NATO membership is not an option, we must at least provide security guarantees that are strong enough to make Russia never try again.”

The NATO chief said that Russia’s offensive progress in 2025 has been dire and Moscow’s “advances only a few meters a day” and in Pokrovsk they have been desperately struggling for a year and a half.

Rutte warned, “Russia will remain a long-term threat for a long time.

“If a Russian president is willing to sacrifice a million people from his own people for this fallacy of correcting history, we must be prepared.

He added this is why “we must spend much more on our defense.” he stressed “a peace plan does not change the assessment of Russia as a long-term threat to Europe.
