The Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to move into Ukraine and an invasion has now started which is a “very dark days in Europe.”

Putin has sent his troops to the formally recognised regions of Donetsk and Luhansk areas of Ukraine which are a strong holds for Kremlin backed separatists.

The British Health Secretary Sajid Javid warned on Tuesday that everyone is “waking up to a very dark day in Europe” after Putin ordered the invasion.

After hosting the emergency Cobra meeting, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “This is I should stress just the first barrage of UK economic sanctions against Russia because we expect I’m afraid that there is more Russian irrational behaviour to come.

“I’m afraid all the evidence is that President Putin is indeed bent on a full scale invasion of the Ukraine, the overrunning, the subjugation of an independent, sovereign European country and I think, let’s be absolutely clear, that will be absolutely catastrophic.”

Speaking to broadcaster Johnson said the UK will continue diplomatic efforts to avert violence, but added, “I just want everybody to be in no doubt that if Vladimir Putin continues down this track of violence, of aggression, of a full-scale invasion, of encircling Kyiv itself which is what he seems to be proposing to do, capturing the Ukrainian capital, it is absolutely vital that that effort, that conquest of another European country, should not succeed and that Putin should fail.”

He added, “This is plainly in breach of international law, it’s a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine.

“It is a repudiation of the Minsk process and the Minsk Agreements.

“I think it’s a very ill omen and a very dark sign.”

It was “yet another indication that things are moving in the wrong direction in Ukraine.”

On Monday Russia formally recognised the independence of the two regions of Donetsk and Luhansk which are based in the breakaway areas in the eastern part of Ukraine.

Putin gave a televised speech on Monday evening and called Ukraine a “puppet regime” who are controlled by the US and the West.

Putin said, “Ukraine is not just a neighboring country. They are a part of our culture,” he then noted that the country has taken down soviet era statues.

Putin then warned Ukrainians, “You want decommunisation? We will show you what it’s like.”

He then signed a decree which formally recognises the self proclaimed regions of “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic,” which are controlled by the Kremlin’s separatists.

Javid told Sky News, “We have seen that he has recognised these breakaway eastern regions in Ukraine and from the reports we can already tell that he has sent in tanks and troops.

“From that you can conclude that the invasion of Ukraine has begun.

“We are waking up to a very dark day in Europe and it’s clear from what we have already seen and found out today that the Russians, President Putin, has decided to attack the sovereignty of Ukraine and its territorial integrity.”
