Most coveted finance jobs revealed

A new study from CMC Markets, an online trading platform, analysed monthly Google searches using Ahrefs for jobs within the financial industry to see which career is the most in demand. They also extracted the number of UK-based listings for each finance role from Indeed’s job site in July 2023.

An Auditor is the most sought-after finance job in the UK, with 223,900 monthly Google searches. There are currently 785 auditor jobs in the finance sector on Indeed, and the average salary for an auditor is £32,405 per year in the United Kingdom from the 3,500 wages reported.

Actuarial careers came closely behind as the second most sought-after job in finance, with 89,500 searches per month for the job role. An Actuary was the only career within the insurance sector to make it into the top ten. There are currently 1,030 actuary jobs within the finance sector on Indeed, and the average salary for an actuary is £32,405 per year in the United Kingdom from the 3,500 wages reported.

With a total Google search volume of 39,800, Forensic Accounting has emerged as the third-most sought-after career in the financial job market. Despite being one of the ten most desirable finance jobs, forensic accounting only yields 128 job openings in the UK with an average salary of £52,969, according to Indeed.

Coming in fourth place is Corporate Banking, with 31,100 average monthly Google searches. There are currently 3,748 corporate banking jobs on Indeed, with an average salary of £22,115 in the UK, from 1,000 salaries reported.

The fifth-most sought-after finance career is a Compliance Officer, with 30,200 Google searches on average per month. According to Indeed, the average salary for a compliance officer in the UK is £34,190 from 9,900 salaries reported.

Bank Telling is the sixth-most sought-after finance career on the list. This career is searched 24,300 times a month on Google. According to Indeed, the average salary for a bank teller in the UK is £22,259 from 69 salaries reported.

With 16,300 Google searches a month, a Branch Manager was the seventh most searched for a finance career. The average salary for this job role in the UK is £33,361, taken from 6,500 salaries measured.

According to the research, a Loan Officer is the eighth-most sought-after finance career, with an average of 14,400 monthly Google searches monthly. The average salary for a loan officer in the UK is £33,800, according to 361 salaries reported on Indeed.

A Risk Manager is the ninth-most sought-after finance career right now. Google searches for this career totalled 11,700 monthly, with an average salary of £48,669, the second-highest on the list.

The research found that a Client Advisor is the tenth most sought-after job in the finance industry, with an average of 3,150 monthly Google searches. From the 15,500 salaries reported, the average salary for a client advisor role in the UK is £22,113.

Michael Hewson, chief market analyst atCMC Markets, commented on the findings: “Despite the scarcity of jobs in some industries, there seems to be a noticeable interest within different sectors of the finance world.

“It is interesting to see that a large proportion of this number comprises searches related to the banking sector. And as a whole, financial careers are being searched for 2,935,840 times per month on Google.

“This number is something to keep an eye on as we approach the new year, as people may look to seek new opportunities in 2023.”
