The Mirror news site has been accused by the Met Office for “clickbait journalism” as their story urged people to “shut the curtains” as there will be rain in England.

The forecaster poster a video on TikTok brutally slamming the news site after they issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in parts of the UK on Friday and Saturday.

The video has been viewed more than 3 million times in response to the Mirror’s social media post that said, “Exact date UK will get pummelled by rain as Met Office warns to shut curtains.”

A Met Office presenter said there is “so much wrong” with the Mirror’s post and he said this is “nonsense.”

He added, Firstly, there isn’t even any exact date mentioned in the video… Secondly, it’s not always a heatwave we’re experiencing right now – it’s just a spell of fine, warm, dry weather that should be enjoyed if you like sunshine.”

In Response to the “curtains thing” the presenter showed the Met Office’s own press release saying, “Check all of these and then go through all of our posts on TikTok and you won’t find a single mention of shutting your curtains at 4.30pm.”

He did say their website recommends to close curtains at dusk, but this is purely to help keep your home warm.

He concluded, “It’s just another example of clickbait journalism using weather stories to sell papers and get cheap clicks.

“No doubt there will be more of these kind of headlines in the months to come about how we’ll get 100 days of blizzards or 950-mile storm fronts that are set to batter the UK. Please don’t believe them.”
