Labour has announced its commitment to strengthening its Net Zero strategy, stating that expanding low-carbon energy is essential for the country to safeguard itself against future global energy crises, particularly following the recent situation involving Iran.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle emphasised that accelerating the deployment of renewable energy technologies, such as offshore wind and solar power, will help reduce Britain’s reliance on oil and gas imports from politically unstable regions.
His remarks come in response to significant fluctuations in global energy markets due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
Reports indicate that European gas prices have surged by approximately 80%, while oil prices have jumped by nearly 20% after strikes related to Iran disrupted Gulf production and raised concerns about supply.
Energy analysts have cautioned that if these price pressures persist, UK households and drivers may experience substantial increases in energy and fuel costs, reminiscent of the impact felt by consumers following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Kyle said on Tuesday: “Doubling down on renewables is, yes, right for climate change, it’s, yes, right for jobs, it is also essential because we keep on seeing these lived examples of how instability, through regional instability, is creeping into our energy prices, for which the British Government has no agency.
