The week countdown is on, meaning millions rush to the supermarkets to find the best deals for their Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
New research from investment platform Saxo reveals how much your Christmas dinner is set to cost you at the UK’s top supermarkets, from cheapest to most expensive, and some of the findings might surprise you.
The findings revealed that the upmarket supermarket, Waitrose, came out cheaper than Iceland and Sainsbury for a Turkey with all the trimmings. A Waitrose Christmas dinner will cost you £40.32 while the Iceland equivalent will cost you £46.70 and Sainsburys will set you back £42.67.
Aldi just piped Asda to the top spot for the cheapest Christmas dinner, where a roast with all the trimmings will cost you £24.62 and just 14p more at Asda costing £24.86.
At the other end of the scale, Ocado claimed the most expensive place, where your dinner could cost you nearly £80 and £55 more than Aldi.
Commenting on rising food prices, Ole Hansen, from investment platform Saxo said, “Year-on-year (YoY) food price inflation is currently at a moderate 2% according to the UN FAO’s Global Food Price index. A decline in sugar (-22% YoY) and cereal prices (-9%) partly
offsetting rises in meat (+6%), vegetable oils (+19%) and dairy products (+19%). Besides these major food groups, local weather worries have seen sharply higher prices for cocoa, coffee, and orange juice.
“The temporary strength of the pound seen in August and September was too short lived to
filter through and have an impact on import prices.
“Energy prices and labor remains the key input costs in the production of food, and while
labor costs have slowed from an inflation-driven spike the cost of diesel on a wholesale
basis has slumped with the gasoil futures contract, the feedstock for diesel, trading down
around 25% in the past year.”
