‘He is going for it’: Labour leadership rumours engulf Streeting and Starmer

13th May 26 11:58 am

Wes Streeting has been forced to quash explosive speculation that he is preparing to resign and launch an immediate leadership challenge against Keir Starmer, as tensions inside Labour spill into open view.

The Health Secretary was reported to have held a crunch meeting in Downing Street on Tuesday morning, fuelling claims from unnamed allies that a move against the Prime Minister could be imminent within hours or days.

One source was quoted as saying: “He is going for it,” while another insisted: “If they think this is over, they’re going to be disappointed.”

The reports quickly set off a fresh wave of Westminster intrigue, with suggestions that Streeting could attempt to mount a leadership bid against senior Labour figures, including Ed Miliband and Angela Rayner.

However, the speculation was met with immediate pushback from Labour figures close to the Prime Minister, who sought to downplay the idea of an imminent challenge and warned against destabilising the Government ahead of key parliamentary moments.

A senior Labour source questioned the political optics of any leadership manoeuvre, referencing concerns about perceptions within constitutional circles and the timing of any internal move.

Further criticism was also levelled at Streeting’s reported associations within party power networks, with opponents suggesting they could complicate any future leadership ambitions.

Despite the swirling rumours, a spokesman for Streeting rejected the claims outright, insisting he remains focused on his role in government.

“Wes is the Health Secretary, he is proud of his record of falling waiting lists and a recovering NHS,” the spokesman said.

“He is not planning to say anything following his meeting with the Prime Minister that might distract from the King’s Speech.”

The episode adds to a growing sense of instability within Labour, as speculation over leadership, economic direction and internal divisions continues to intensify following a difficult period for the Government.
