Germany has permanently deployed thousands of troops to the Russian border in a historic move not seen since World War Two.
Berlin has sent 5,000 armoured brigade to Lithuania on NATO’s eastern flank which is Germany’s first foreign deployment since WWII in response to Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.
The 45th Armoured Brigade which has been newly formed held a ceremony on Tuesday in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
Brigadier General Christoph Huber said, “We have a clear mission: to ensure the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies on Nato’s eastern flank.”

“In doing so, we also protect Nato territory – and Germany itself,” he added.
Germany is considering reinstating mandatory conscription as threat of World War Three keeps growing.
Russia’s constant threats of conflict have prompted Germany’s top general to warn citizens that mandatory conscription is “absolutely” necessary to ensure they can defend themselves against war.
The German Chief of Defence Carsten Breuer has told Radio 4 they need 100,000 more troops and that conscription in “some form” is needed.
General Breuer told Radio 4, “We won’t get this additional 100,000 soldiers without having one or the other, a model of conscription.
“We don’t have to determine now what model brings them. For me it’s only important that we get the soldiers in.”
Germany’s most senior general said that Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine will not be his last and an attack on NATO is likely by 2030.
He said during his interview, “It’s not about how much time I need, it’s much more about how much time Putin gives us to be prepared. And the sooner we are prepared the better.”
