Furious protesters heckle Starmer calling him a ‘traitor’ and ‘Jew harmer’ in Golders Green

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was met with jeers and hostile chants as he visited Golders Green following Wednesday’s terrorist stabbing attack in north London, which left two Jewish men in hospital.

Sir Keir and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood arrived in the area on Thursday to meet emergency responders and discuss the police operation after the attack, which has been formally declared a terrorist incident.

Footage shows crowds lining the streets as the Prime Minister’s convoy arrived, with protesters shouting “Keir Starmer, Jew harmer” and “shame on you”. Others were heard calling for him to “show your face”, while some accused him of being a “traitor”.

Police officers were deployed in significant numbers to hold back demonstrators, some of whom carried placards and flags. One image showed a protest sign featuring Jeremy Corbyn wearing a mask of Sir Keir Starmer.

The visit comes amid growing political pressure on the Government to respond to a series of attacks targeting Jewish communities in London, as well as broader concerns about antisemitism and community safety.

Earlier this week, two men aged 34 and 76 were stabbed in Golders Green and taken to the hospital for treatment. A 45-year-old British national, born in Somalia, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

The Prime Minister has announced plans to increase funding for protective security measures for Jewish communities, including an additional £25 million package to strengthen policing and community protection.

Ministers are also drawing up proposals for new legislation designed to tackle state-linked extremist activity in the UK, including measures intended to restrict groups and individuals with alleged links to foreign regimes such as Iran.

Sir Keir has said the issue is a matter of national responsibility, describing efforts to tackle antisemitism and extremist violence as “our fight” rather than one solely affecting the Jewish community.

The Home Secretary has condemned what she described as a “spate of attacks” on Jewish communities, saying that some incidents have been claimed by groups alleging links to the Iranian regime. She stressed that such claims remain under investigation and urged restraint while police inquiries continue.

She said: “We have seen this spate of attacks. I think it is right that the police have the space to get on with their job.”

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the suspect in the Golders Green attack had previously been referred to the Government’s Prevent counter-extremism programme.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the individual was known to Prevent and had been subject to a referral in 2020, which was closed the same year.

A police spokesman said: “Given the investigation remains ongoing, we will not be providing any further information in respect of this matter at this time. We remain focused on securing justice for the victims of this attack.”

The disclosure is likely to prompt further scrutiny of counter-extremism safeguards, as well as renewed debate over the effectiveness of early intervention programmes in preventing radicalisation.

Counter-terrorism officers are continuing to lead the investigation, working alongside community security groups and local authorities as they assess potential links between the attack and wider incidents in recent weeks.

The Prime Minister’s visit, intended as a show of support for the community and emergency services, instead unfolded against a backdrop of anger and political tension, underscoring the heightened sensitivity surrounding security, policing and community relations in the capital.
