The Home Secretary has issued a very stern statement that those who have committed acts of violence and destruction over the past six days will face many years in prison.

Yvette Cooper warned there will be a “reckoning” for all those rioting “thugs, criminals and extremists” who attacked the police and shops across the country.

A police stationed and a citizens advice bureau was set on fire and on Sunday a mob targeted a Holiday Inn Express in Rotherham that is housing asylum seekers and set furniture on fire.

Cooper has promised there will be “swift justice” for the rioters and that the courts could be opened for 24hours to process those responsible, she also said that there is plenty of jail cells empty, ready and waiting for them.

The Home Secretary wrote in The Times on Monday, “Make no mistake: there will be a reckoning for the individuals who took part in this violence, those who whipped them up on social media and in online chat forums, and those who have felt emboldened by this moment to stir up racial hatred.

“Whatever they and some of their political supporters may tell us, these are not patriots standing up for their communities.

“They are thugs, criminals and extremists who betray the values our country is built on.”

Cooper said that the government backs the police to take the “strongest possible action against every level of perpetrator.”

“There must and will be consequences for the damage these thugs have done, and they will be paying the price for years to come,” she added.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Stephen Parkinson vowed on Sunday there will be “severe consequences” and the Crown Prosecution Service prosecutors will be “working around the clock” with court cases.
