The Chinese government have said that they do not recognise the British National Overseas passports (BNO) for those who are holders in Hong Kong, as they are not “valid” travel documents.

China could block all Hong Kongers who hold the BNO passport from leaving the former British territory to access the Boris Johnson’s offer of UK citizenship.

The Chinese Ambassador to the UK Lui Xiaoming said that the UK will “pay the price” if they persist with what Beijing considers, a hostile policy towards Beijing.

Xiaoming said this is not a threat, as China does not make threats, and in a war of words, he said, “we just let you know the consequences.”

He said, “We make no threats, we threaten nobody. We just let you know the consequences.

“If you do not want to be our partners and our friends, you want to treat China as a hostile country, you will pay the price.

“That means you will lose the benefits of treating China as a friend.”
