Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun said that authorities in Beirut are investigating what caused the explosion at the capitals port.

They are exploring the possibility that it was caused by a rocket or a bomb attack. On Friday President Aoun said the number of those killed has now gone up to 154, whilst a further 5,000 people were injured.

He told reporters, “The cause has not been determined yet.

“There is a possibility of external interference through a rocket or bomb or other act.”

Around 300,000 residents in the capital are unable to return to their damaged homes, as the explosion blew out windows, and affected structures leaving many uninhabitable.

Lebanese officials estimate the wide-spread losses will amount to around $15bn as a result of more than 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded.
