Nearly half the UK population (49 per cent) thinks Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt should step down, a ComRes poll for ITV News at Ten has revealed.

The poll found that three in five people (60 per cent) agree there should be an independent inquiry into whether or not Hunt was involved in the passing of information to News Corp during its bid for BSkyB.

This comes after David Cameron rejected demands for an inquiry, as he wanted to wait untill the culture secretary gave more evidence to the Leveson enquiry.

According to the poll 73 per cent of people believe politicians are too close to the media while 11 per cent don’t think so.

Just last week, Adam Smith, special adviser to Jeremy Hunt, quit following allegations that he held inappropriate discussions with News Corporation while the media giant was bidding to take over BSkyB.

Sixty-two per cent think the allegations against Adam Smith show just how close government officials are to the Murdoch empire. However, 69 per cent say that politicians have always been close to the media and this is nothing new.
