Trump preparing to deploy thousands more US troops to Middle East

The United States is preparing to deploy an additional 6,000 troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran escalate and a fragile ceasefire remains under strain, according to U.S. officials cited in American media reports.

The planned deployment forms part of a broader military build-up ordered by President Donald Trump, who is said to be seeking increased leverage over Tehran as diplomatic efforts continue in parallel with contingency planning for potential escalation.

According to reports, around 6,000 personnel are currently aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and accompanying naval vessels, which are being repositioned to strengthen the U.S. presence in the region.

In addition, approximately 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected to arrive in theatre by the end of the month, joining existing forces already stationed across multiple bases.

Current and former defence officials estimate that roughly 50,000 U.S. personnel are already engaged in regional operations linked to the Iran mission, with further Marine deployments from California having taken place in recent weeks.

The Pentagon has not confirmed whether the reinforcement signals preparation for direct military action. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has declined to comment on the possibility of ground operations.

Hegseth said: “You can’t fight and win a war if you tell your adversary what you are willing to do or what you are not willing to do to include boots on the ground.

“Our adversary right now thinks there are 15 different ways we could come at them with boots on the ground. And guess what? There are.”

Officials say the build-up comes as Washington attempts to pressure Iran into a wider agreement covering its nuclear programme and regional activities, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

Iran has not publicly responded to the latest reports, but tensions remain elevated following months of intermittent strikes and diplomatic breakdowns.

Analysts say the simultaneous movement of carrier strike groups, amphibious units, and Marine Expeditionary forces reflects a strategy aimed at both deterrence and signalling readiness, rather than an immediate decision to launch ground operations.

The developments come as the situation between the United States and Iran remains highly volatile, with diplomacy and military posture continuing to evolve in parallel.
