Temporary jobs are already paying more than the 2024 National Living Wage, which comes into effect in April, analysis by Indeed Flex, the online marketplace for flexible and temporary work, has found.

All roles listed on Indeed Flex beat the increased National Living Wage of £11.44 an hour, which kicks in for workers aged 21 and above from 1st April.

This is a rise of 9.8% from the current hourly rate of £10.42 for people aged 23 and over.

The best-paid positions on Indeed Flex are predominantly in hospitality, led by head chef and lead chef roles, which pay £24.19 and £21.65 per hour respectively.

A recent survey of employers by Indeed Flex found that a third of companies (33%) rely on temporary workers to combat staff shortages and maintain operational efficiency. Almost half (47%) increased their use of temporary staff over the past year.

The temping sector posted solid growth during 2023. Indeed Flex has recorded a 24% surge in the number of workers using its platform over the past 12 months.

Novo Constare, CEO and Co-founder of Indeed Flex, said, “Months before the increased National Living Wage takes effect, all roles on Indeed Flex already pay temps more for every hour they work.

“Using temporary rather than permanent staff gives employers total flexibility with their wage bill, meaning they’re only paying for people when they need them. By offering attractive hourly rates, employers can bring in highly skilled people – many of whom are happy to return to the same business time and time again.

“It just goes to show that temporary employment can serve as a long-term, sustainable source of income for skilled, dedicated people who value the freedom that temping offers to fit their shifts around other jobs or priorities, such as childcare, education or entrepreneurship.”
