Cyprus airspace closed as Greece scrambles jets after ‘suspicious object’ was detected

Cyprus has taken heightened precautionary measures following the detection of a “suspicious object” on radar near its southern airspace approaches.

On Wednesday, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced that authorities were responding to an unidentified aerial contact observed near air routes linked to Lebanon, a region currently experiencing heightened tension.

Local media outlets reported that certain sections of Cypriot airspace had been temporarily closed as a safety measure. However, officials have not disclosed the specific nature of the detected object, leaving much speculation about its origin and purpose.

In response to the potential threat, F-16 Fighting Falcon jets operated by Greece and stationed on the island were swiftly scrambled to investigate. Concurrently, air defence monitoring operations were heightened, and civil aviation authorities coordinated with military controllers to ensure the safety of commercial air traffic.

This incident comes at a time of escalating conflict across the eastern Mediterranean, involving major regional and international players such as Israel, Iran, and the United States. Cyprus has increasingly become a focal point of strategic interest due to its geographical proximity to Lebanon and Israel, as well as the presence of British sovereign base areas on the island. Moreover, the region is currently witnessing a surge in military and humanitarian air traffic, heightening the complexity of the operational environment.

As investigations continue, officials have refrained from confirming whether the radar contact was a drone, missile, aircraft, or a false signal. The uncertainty surrounding the object underscores the delicate nature of regional security and the need for vigilant monitoring and response mechanisms.

Letymbiotis wrote on X: “A possible suspicious object has been detected in the airspace near Lebanon.

“For precautionary reasons, all appropriate measures have been taken by the competent authorities to investigate the incident and, if required, to address it. An update on the outcome will follow.”
