The launch of Gordon Ramsay’s new Mayfair restaurant was tainted by a rival who made 100 fake bookings that left tables empty.

In an interview with ITV’s Jonathan Ross, the celebrity chef said that only 40 people turned up on the opening night, thanks to the fake bookings.

Ramsay did not name the rival responsible for the episode but said that the empty tables left staff very upset.

He told the show: “It’s bad spirit and you see the staff and they are down and frustrated, I was there to pick them up and make sure we stay focused.”

According to Forbes, Ramsay is worth $47m. He owns 24 restaurants around the world and 12 in the capital.

Ramsay is set to open a second restaurant on the site of Aubergine, the Chelsea restaurant he bought for £1.2m. It’s where he started his career 20 years ago. He is also reportedly going to launch a restaurant in Hong Kong.
