Zuckerberg wants to bring internet to remote parts of the world
Facebook’s plane Aquila has just completed its test run after flying for 96 minutes in Arizona.
Built in Somerset, the plan has the wingspan of a Boeing 737 can can fly 80mph. It uses about 5,000W of power and can reach cruising heigh of 60,000ft.
The solar-powered drone plane has been made to bring the internet to remote regions of the world.
The plans will transmit a signal that can be received by the antennas of small towers and dishes on the ground. The antennas will convert the signal into Wi-Fi or 4G networks.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us,” said Facebook’s vice president of engineering Jay Parikh.
