Starmer told to ‘pick a date and stick to it’ as Labour MPs start planning his exit like a holiday countdown

Sir Keir Starmer is under intensifying pressure from his own MPs to name a departure date, as a deepening row over Peter Mandelson threatens to tip Labour into open revolt.

Senior backbenchers are preparing to move against the Prime Minister in the aftermath of local elections widely expected to inflict historic losses on the party, fuelling fears that his leadership has become a liability.

Privately, a growing number of MPs are urging Sir Keir to set out a clear timetable for his resignation, with some pushing for him to step aside by Labour’s autumn conference — despite his public insistence that he intends to lead the party “beyond” the next general election, GB News reported.

The unrest comes as the Mandelson controversy continues to reverberate through Westminster, sharpening concerns about judgment at the top of Government and eroding confidence among Labour ranks.

At the same time, attention is already turning to potential successors, with manoeuvring underway among senior figures on the Left of the party.

Allies of Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham are said to have discussed a possible leadership arrangement modelled on the so-called “Granita pact” that underpinned the rise of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Under the reported plan, Burnham would mount a leadership bid with the backing of Ms Rayner, who in turn would be promised a senior role of her choosing in a future Cabinet.

Such a pact would represent a significant consolidation of influence on Labour’s Left and a clear signal that preparations for a post-Starmer era are already underway.

For now, however, the Prime Minister remains in Downing Street — but with discontent spreading and electoral pressure mounting, the question in Westminster is no longer whether his authority has been weakened, but how long it can endure.
