Met Office forecasters have warned that snow and strong winds could return to parts of the UK this week as temperatures drop.

A weather warning for strong winds has been issued for northern Scotland, where severe gales developed overnight on Tuesday and are expected to continue until midday on Wednesday across the Outer Hebrides and Inner Hebrides. Gusts of 65–70 mph are possible, with a slight chance of winds reaching 80 mph in exposed areas. The strongest winds are forecast to spread across northwest mainland Scotland and into Orkney on Wednesday morning.

Rain and blustery showers are expected alongside the winds, while snow is possible in the Scottish mountains as colder air moves in. Cloudy skies are forecast early on Wednesday, but clearer spells and sunshine are expected to develop later in the day.

The Met Office said: “The southeast is likely to enjoy the best of the weather on Wednesday when temperatures are set to be near or slightly above average, with 15C peaks possible. The northwest will be cooler with maximum temperatures in the high single figures.”

Met Office said most of the UK will face  winds and outbreaks of rain, while “blustery showers will follow into the northwest with a chance of snow on Scottish mountains.”

Jason Kelly, chief operational meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “A notable shift in wind direction to a north-westerly flow will bring a markedly colder day nationwide on Friday, with the potential for a mixture of sunny spells, heavy showers, coastal gales, and snow over high ground.

“There’s also the possibility of accumulations on lower hills, too. The picture will become clearer closer to the time, so keep an eye on our forecast as the week progresses.”
