A NATO fighter jet burst into flames after being forced into an emergency landing at a Greek airport, triggering a major response from firefighters and forcing flights to be cancelled.
The Greek Air Force F-16 was carrying out a training mission over the Ionian Sea on Thursday afternoon when the pilot received an in-flight fire warning and diverted to Zakynthos (Zante) Airport.
The aircraft, operated by the 116th Fighter Wing at Araxos Air Base, landed safely but caught fire after touching down, according to officials.
The pilot escaped unharmed and was reported to be in good health following the dramatic incident.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the aircraft, while the airport runway was closed to allow firefighters and investigators to deal with the damaged jet.
Local reports suggested the aircraft may also have experienced a landing gear malfunction, although the exact cause remains under investigation by the Hellenic Air Force.
The incident involved an F-16 from one of Greece’s key combat units, the 116th Fighter Wing, which has operated the aircraft since 2007 and plays a central role in the country’s air defence capabilities.

The emergency comes as NATO air forces continue to maintain high levels of training and readiness amid heightened security concerns across Europe.
Investigators will now examine whether the fire warning, a mechanical fault or another technical issue caused the fighter jet to divert and make the emergency landing.
