Makerfield victory could ignite Labour leadership battle

Andy Burnham is preparing to reject Sir Keir Starmer’s offer of a “big role” in Labour if he wins tomorrow’s Makerfield by-election — fuelling speculation that the contest could become the starting point for a fresh leadership showdown.

The Prime Minister attempted to head off a potential challenge from the former leadership contender by insisting Mr Burnham should have a major role in the party, while warning that he would fight any attempt to remove him.

Sir Keir said he did not believe there should be a leadership challenge, arguing that internal battles had damaged previous governments.

But he added: “If there is a challenge, then I intend to fight. I’m not going to walk away from that.”

A victory in Makerfield would give Mr Burnham a platform to return to Westminster and potentially mount a third attempt at leading Labour, after unsuccessful bids against Ed Miliband in 2010 and Jeremy Corbyn in 2016.

Allies of the former health secretary believe he has an advantage by being detached from the current government’s difficulties. A senior source close to his campaign said Mr Burnham benefited from “the wind of change” because he had not been associated with Labour’s recent failings.

The by-election has become a key test for both Labour and Reform UK, with polling suggesting a tight two-way contest. Labour is estimated to be ahead on around 43 to 46 per cent, with Reform close behind on 40 to 41 per cent.

Despite Labour’s lead, insiders remain cautious, with the race described as “too close to call”.

A Burnham win would immediately intensify questions over Sir Keir’s authority — and transform a local by-election into a potential battle for Labour’s future.
